Misuse of material is done to often in our society. There was a particular case that I was watching on BET that involved hip hop videos. During a hip hop concert stage handlers would search through the crowd to find females to bring back stage. Now the victim being interviewed just intended to come back stage to dance and have innocent fun. Much to her surprise in the backstage areas there were camera’s positioned to view under female’s skirts and videotape their butts. Later on she was informed that she was in a videotape being distributed. It not only violated her rights of privacy but the video was extremely sexually suggestive. I know in the times we live in now privacy is extremely hard to maintain. With celebrities videotaping their sexual adventures and the abundance of reality tv shows. But we must respect people’s right to privacy. In the case of the hip hop video, that particular female was depicted in a way that was false. The video made it seem like she was being extremely sexual when she in fact was just dancing to music. They made no knowledge to her that anything would be videotaped thus violating her right of consent.

How to lessen the act of copyright infringement -Lecture 33

Copyright infringement is violated most often through the internet. This can be seen through such applications as limewire, dc++, etc. The hosts and main distributors of these applications are the ones getting sued. One day I was watching MTV and there was a story about this college student who was getting sued for over a thousand dollars for copyright infringement. Sharing a product over the internet with others without the permission of the creator is stealing. By sharing such particular merchandise on the internet it’s taking away from the creators profit. But, then again in my opinion most of the products that are being released nowadays are terrible. People don’t want to spend their money on a product that isn’t worthy of being bought. I think if you release a quality product the less likely people will steal it.

I have one response when it comes to the restriction of lap dances in strip clubs; silly. One of the main ways these performers make money are through lap dances. We shouldn’t take away their main source of income. My main problem with this issue is that I don’t see the point of it. Lap dances aren’t hurting anybody. In fact their doing the opposite. It’s bringing enjoyment to the customer.

This brings me to the issue of why prostitution is illegal? I believe there is nothing wrong when prostitution is done in an organized and safe environment like in Nevada. It is the world’s age old profession. I seen an insight into this world on the HBO series Cathouse. It follows the inside world of a legalized prostitution business in Nevada. In the show the practices look very organized and safe. Condoms are used during all sexual acts. And Customers are able to select from an array of the prostitutes at the particular franchise. It is also another great way to better our economy by the money the establishment brings in. I think more states need to adopt this method. The question I ask is, what bad would come out of the legalization of prostitution?

How parents can protect their child from internet predators- Lecture 31

When I was younger we I knew nothing about the internet. My household first bought a computer when I was at the age of 19. I’m the youngest of three boys. I believe this played an important part in the person I have become today. The internet is truly a superhighway of information. You can just go to a search engine like google and find a huge list of material on any particular subject. Then of course we have chat rooms. Chat rooms really make it easier for pedophiles to exploit children. It provides the platform to converse with children that they may have never had the chance to do. The internet is such an anonymous environment that it allows pedophiles to feel comfortable due to the less likelihood of getting caught. Thus making inappropriate relationships more likely on the internet. What I find alarming is that children know more about computers than their parents. This factor makes it increasingly hard to actually monitor their child’s activities on the internet. I don’t try to tell anyone how to raise their kids but I believe internet use at a young age should be extremely limited. The content on the internet can easily taint ones’ child and put them in reach of pedophiles. If I ever become a parent I would defer my child’s knowledge of the internet until I feel their at the proper age.

I thoroughly agree with the no tolerance rule for child pornography. In my opinion I find it deplorable and disgusting. I feel it is ridiculous when it is stated that viewing child porn would decrease the likelihood of people engaging in it. In many cases, constantly viewing a certain act would make someone curious to try it. Some child porn advocates seem to think that the abusers are doing the damage and not the pictures. This couldn’t be more wrong. The pictures that are posted on the internet not only promote child porn as a whole but it is also a constant reminder to the victim of the incident. In this situation we must always think about the victim because they are the ones who have to suffer with this act for the rest of their lives. Such a trauma must be treated delicately and with compassion.

One of the many contradiction of our society is how underage themes are depicted as sexual. Such cases like this are entertainers like Britney Spears. In her first music video where she was under the age of 18 she was dressed in a catholic school girl outfit doing sexual provocative poses. To me I view this as a form of child porn. She had many adult men fawning over the image of a young innocent yet naughty girl. I think that images like this shouldn’t be allowed because it promotes the child porn mentality. In my opinion images of children being depicted sexually should be banished.

How biased are some of the surveys we view? A lot of times we view surveys from websites or magazines and just pay attention to what their trying to prove instead of how it was conducted. There are occasions where the conductor of the survey is biased and makes sure the results are in favor of their opinion. One must be careful for these scam surveys and view all the information that is presented about it.

One of the main questions in terms of adult content is; how do we keep adult material out of the reach of children? I think the best way to properly filter out adult content from children is by giving out adult verification passwords. When a person first enters into a contract with an internet subscriber they should be given a password to enter into adult websites. Every time an adult website is entered into the computer a password must be put in order for the material to be viewed. This would help to keep adult material away from children.

Regulating adult content- Lecture 28

Regulating adult content is a very prominent issue in American society. Many viewers and friends of mine view such content restriction as ridiculous. I think that such regulation process’ are needed for the betterment of our society. I do find that adult theaters should have locations away from schools, churches, and certain neighborhoods. This serves as a way to keep an adult environment away from children. Our society is already stricken with sexual images all over the television there is no reason it should be easily accessible in our neighborhoods as well.

The only regulation process that I didn’t agree with was the art exhibit. An art exhibit is not even a setting for children, it’s a place for adults. This is why I believe a person should be able to express themselves anyway artistically due to the age of the audience. This reminds me of the case that was mentioned in Lecture 28 against the Two Live Crew. Where they tried to prosecute them on the content of their lyrics. Two Live Crew’s is completely directed at adults and isn’t meant for children to listen to. Once the parental advisory imprint is on I believe an artist should be able to release adult material.

U.S. should be more open to porn- Lecture 27

I believe that one of the biggest problems with the U.S. is it’s promotion of sex and fear of sex. In American society we sell sex in everything from cologne to music but when it comes porn we view it as a negative. I think that it would be helpful to accept porn more so in our society. If one looks at Japanese culture they would notice they are sexually open. I think that is a good system. I think this is one of the main reasons why sex crosses over to so many other genres of our society. By accepting it more so in the genre of porn where it belongs I think images of sex would diminish from other genres.

I find it funny that in years past that a juror system was responsible for judging obscene materials. Easily one of the jurors could be a pedophile or sex offender and no one would know. If they had no record of such an action they could easily infiltrate into the jurors selection. Then of course one must take into account sexual preference. One might have a heterosexual juror involved in a case that has to deal with gay obscenity. If the person happens to despise gay people their personal feelings might influence their judgement on the case in an unfair manner. Thus making this system unfit.

Safety or privacy- Lecture 26

Lecture 26 truly showed how far the ignorance of people extended in years past. For it to be stated that underclass and women were more susceptible to being influenced by obscene materials is ridiculous. Anyone at any social status can be privy to being influenced. Then of course this poses the question, what is to be considered obscene? Everyone has different views of what obscene material is. As long as the material isn’t showing anything illegal it shouldn’t be seen as obscene. I feel this way is easier because judging it through other methods would be to hard to determine.

Then there is the issue of privacy. I believe that everyone does have a right to privacy but if there is cause for suspicion then a search should be done. This is done for the safety of the people. Systems like this are initiated to prevent any harmful materials from reaching our country. When having to choose between safety and privacy I would rather have safety.
